Decluttering With The Garbage Bag Therapy

Updated: Mar 21, 2023

Sometimes it’s hard to know where you should start to organise, or maybe you feel overwhelmed and struggle to find the motivation to begin the process of organising your workspace or living space.

What I want to bring to you today is this quick tip to get you started: The Garbage Bag Therapy.

It consists of grabbing a garbage bag and choosing one room, a cabinet or even one drawer and your goal is to look for any items that should be in the garbage bin, not in your living space, taking up unnecessary room. It's a simple but effective technique that helps you quickly remove unwanted items and make room for the things that matter.

Additionally, it can also be a fun and engaging activity to involve the whole family, especially if you turn it into a friendly competition. It's a great way to motivate everyone to tidy up their personal spaces and contribute to the overall cleanliness of the house.

If you are decluttering with your family, you can set a 15-minute timer and have each person use their own garbage bag to collect as much rubbish as possible in their assigned area. For example, you might tackle the kitchen or bathroom while your partner focuses on the storage room or bedroom, and your kids declutter their own bedroom, the living room, or the area where they keep their toys. Whoever collects the most trash will be declared the winner.

But if you are working alone, set a 5-minute timer and aim to fill the garbage bag with as much rubbish as possible in that time and area defined. Or don’t use a timer and just challenge yourself to go through the whole house looking for trash everywhere.

This is an excellent way to start decluttering and organising your space. Instead of agonising over what to keep and what to throw away, you'll focus on getting rid of items that are clearly garbage. You can use this technique regularly, and it is much easier to practice "letting go" in this way, resulting in a therapeutic and rewarding process.

Remember, decluttering doesn't have to be a daunting task. Starting with small steps like The Garbage Bag Therapy can make it less overwhelming and more enjoyable.

So, go ahead and give it a try now and see how much clutter you can clear out (and come back here to comment below on how you went). In the next blog post, I’ll provide more tips for the next steps. Stay tuned on my website and social media, so you don't miss out.

Good luck and have fun!
